Charlton Athletic set to hijack Derby County’s bid for League One striker

Charlton Athletic are set to rival fellow Sky Bet Championship side Derby County in the race to sign Blackpool striker Armand Gnanduillet, according to a report from South London Press.

The French forward was a target for Lee Bowyer’s side in the summer after the Addicks achieved promotion back to the second tier, but a deal fell through at the last minute and Gnanduillet remained on the Fylde Coast.

Reports suggest that talks were in an “advanced stage” between Gnanduillet and Charlton about completing the switch, but it never come to a head.

It has perhaps been beneficial for his side and himself that he did stay there, as his form this season may have earned a bit of extra money on any potential transfer fee, as well as a potential increase in wages.

He is currently the third top goalscorer in Sky Bet League One, with Peterborough United duo Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa the only two players ahead of him.

The 27-year-old’s form this season had attracted the interest of Derby County, who are looking for a striker to score the goals and fire them back up the table following a poor start to Phillip Cocu’s reign in charge.

But they face fierce competition from Charlton, who are preparing themselves for several bids for striker Lyle Taylor in the January transfer window.

Gnanduillet’s contract at Bloomfield Road expires in the summer, but Blackpool are expected to try and offer him a new deal in order to persuade him to stay at the Fylde Coast club.
