Peterborough boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a win that sent Port Vale plunging back into the relegation zone.

The hosts ended a frustrating first half on a high when Joel Randall's 25-yard thunderbolt sailed past helpless keeper Connor Ripley - courtesy of a double deflection off Vale men Rhys Walters and Alex Iacovitti - to hand them the lead seconds before the break.

Randall, Ephron Mason-Clark, Ricky-Jade Jones and Kwame Poku had all squandered good chances before Ripley pulled off a fine save to deny Archie Collins, but the following corner - taken short by captain Harrison Burrows to Randall - led to Posh hitting the front.

Burrows followed up his EFL Trophy final heroics with another goal as Posh doubled their lead 11 minutes in the second half.

The captain struck for the 12th time this season when he sent Ripley the wrong way from the spot after Ryan Loft's pull on Josh Knight.

And Burrows was again involved when Posh put the result beyond doubt in the 86th minute as his left-wing cross was headed into his own net by the unfortunate Iacovitti.

Vale fell back into the bottom four on goal difference as they failed to manage an attempt on target until second half stoppage time when substitute Uche Ikpeazu's blast was spectacularly tipped over by Jed Steer.

After the exploits on Sunday at Wembley I thought we may struggle tonight , sorry very pleasing to see The Posh pretty much dominate from start to finish. A good win that keeps our hopes of Automatic promotion alive. Lincolnshire Posh

Well lads we've just got a new recruit in Gizzle, he'll be PuP'ing on Saturday hoping that Pompey can put Bolton to bed, also fans in white shirts are also ordering the PFC shirt as we speak, you never know you might just get 2nd after all, what a season that would be a cup & a promotion, sadly for you though if it happens Ferg will be off to Man Utd in the summer.

Good win for Posh. Makes the last few games very exciting at the top and bottom of the league.

Dire again from the Vale. Fact is we have far too many duff players - a legacy of lamentably bad recruitment in the last 18 months. Unwanted cast-offs, injury-prone has-beens, and no reliable goalscorers

Disappointing to lose by such a margin especially as the final relegation slot could be decided on goal difference. We now have two home games against mid table Exeter & Wycombe; safe and with little to play for other than pride. If we don't win both of these game, we don't deserve to stay up. UTV

Well Vale, you should have put 11 behind the ball and pushed the play up the field for a draw and avoided any goals going in... No more goals against and a point would be an amazing result for you right now.

Routine win for Posh, but the first half was dire until the goal. Way too slow and deliberate against a team with no ambition whatsoever. Vale by far the poorest side seen in many years.
