Port Vale moved out of the League One drop zone thanks to a goalless draw at Wigan.

The home side came close to scoring with their first attack, when Matt Smith's shot took a huge deflection off Thelo Aasgaard, completely wrong-footing Vale keeper Connor Ripley, only for the ball to sail inches past a post.

Former Wigan man Gavin Massey then had a great chance to mark his return to the DW Stadium with a goal, only to be thwarted by England Under-21 stopper Sam Tickle.

Smith's deliveries were causing concern for Ripley, who had to act smartly to take the ball off Aasgaard's feet, before tipping another cross round a post.

Martial Godo hit a post as Wigan pushed further, with substitute Charlie Kelman unable to force home the rebound.

But Vale finished the stronger and almost nicked it in the closing stages.

Tom Sang headed wide from an unmarked position, before Tickle parried out a deflected shot from James Plant, and did even better to divert the rebound from Baylee Dipepa past a post.

With five games left, Vale have now edged above Burton on goal difference - and, having picked up seven points from their past four matches, Darren Moore's revitalised side also have a game in hand.

    It’s another missed opportunity by the Vale but they are working hard and battling, so that’s a big improvement.

    4 clean sheets from the last 6 games is a huge improvement from the Vale but we've still got the massive issue of not scoring many which could be the killer as we really need another 3 wins or 2 wins & 2 draws.
    Also Cheltenham's fixtures could see them escape and condemn both Vale & Burton to the drop. We need to target Shrewsbury and Cambridge and overtake at least one of them. It's a big ask.

      Cheltenham have some tough games as well - Peterborough, Stevenage and Lincoln who are all chasing the playoffs. This is going to the last game.

    Maloney's team selection, formation and tactics would be completely baffling if they existed. A team with no recognised strikers will find goals hard to come by; there is a complete lack of ideas when it comes to attacking play. If he isn't sacked at the end of the season I for one will not renew my season ticket.

    I’m not psychic but I didn’t need to be to have predicted today’s outcome. This dull, boring negative dross has become the norm. If Maloney is still here next season, no-one but a die hard fanatic will be bothering turning up.

    Sad display of football continues for this coach. 40 year fan but I cannot watch Wigan's boring game much longer. Different lineups every game, same dull tactics. Terrible coaching. At least I was spared watching Magennis today.

    Another pathetic performance from pathetic athletic. It's such a shame they can't approach any matches like fearless warriors, attacking at every opportunity. At least their season is coming to a close soon.

    I thought Vale edged the game and had chances to secure the 3pts they desperately needed. Out of the bottom 4 but still many twists to come I’m sure.

    Wigan v Vale invokes memories of arguably the greatest comeback by Wigan to win 5-3 after being 3-0 down at half time. Shame the 2024 version was a drab affair where the only excitement was Kenny Morris squeaking with pride at the attendance, although with entertainment totally lacking, 11000 cardboard cutouts would have had equal pleasure. Only one more home match to get through now Kenny!

    Martinez said that maloney has a fantastic football brain , can he please take it out of the jar under his bed and stick it between his ears in time for next season ??? Also you don't have to be a master tactician in league one , you just have to try to win , and understand the fans needs , ie entertainment for their hard earned cash , that's losing its value at every turn. Get real maloney.

    Good use of the squad by Darren today, players all working hard, just a few who weren’t on it today. That said, Wigan were there for the taking, time wasting after 5 minutes, unbelievable for their home fans to put up with that…

    At this time upsets are the norm. The top 8 teams are dreaming of a move and the bottom 8 are trying to avoid one. Which makes every game a tough one. PV gave it all they had and could easily have pulled off a smash and grab win at the end, something the Latics used to do regularly. But it's still a well-earned point even though the fans are disappointed.
